Why do a vessel conversion? Why not simply buy a yacht that is configured for long distance cruising? The primary reason that people are increasingly buying a ship and having it converted into a yacht is because we start with a solid steel, fuel-efficient hull design and commercial-grade systems and build yacht-finish superstructure, amenities and fixtures on that foundation. The result is a rugged, continuous-duty ship, repurposed as a luxury yacht, rather than a yacht simply masquerading as an expedition vessel.
It makes sense financially and saves time. With a conversion of a commercial vessel into a yacht, an owner can save millions of dollars and save many months in the development by starting with the most appropriate existing hull, propulsion and other major commercial systems, rather than starting with a blank sheet of paper.
Some foundation or ‘donor’ vessels have ice-class hulls and most have a range of 5,000 to 15,000 miles. They can be mechanically refit as appropriate and superstructure designed to your specifications, with features including helipads, swimming pools and tender garages for cars, scooters, fishing boats, jet-skis, submarines, etc.
We have many excellent vessels available for sale, including existing expedition vessels and commercial ships which have been specifically selected for their suitability to purpose as an expedition vessel.
Whether you buy a foundation commercial vessel from us or not, we can assist you in deploying the expertise necessary to plan and execute a refit project or conversion. We can advise on re-powering a vessel to bring it into Tier III compliance, assist with implementation of leading-edge alternative energy systems and installation of stabilizers, compliant helidecks and many other features.
Of course we advise our clients on the most suitable vessel for their objectives, and we also represent some owners in the specific marketing and sale of their yachts or ships. We are experts in market positioning, valuation, creative deal structure and careful transaction management. After your vessel is afloat, we can advise on the charter market positioning and pricing to maximize charter revenue if you want to defray some expenses.
